Current Trend of Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy in Children

Abstract
pediaricians usually are not involved in the decision of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, which is one of the most frequent operation undertaken in childhood. So current trend of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy was investigated to see the role of
pediatricians.
Tree hundred and twenty-nine cases were included in the study and they were under 15 years of age(190 males and 139 females). We reviewed the records of the patients first and made the phone questionnaire about the changes of symptoms before and
after
the operation.
@ES Following results were obtained:
@EN 1.The type of operation was composed of adenoidectomy in 10 cases, tonsillectomy in 48 cases and tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in 271 cases.
2. Clinical manifestations in these patients were recurrent sore throat and frequent common cold (65%), snoring (55.3%) and mouth breathing (51.6%) in the order of frequency.
3. The surgical indications in these patients were adenoid hyperplasia wit chronic nasal obstruction in 73.3%(241 cases), tonsillar hyperplasia with obstruction in 57.4%(189 cases) and snoring in 51%.
4. The phone questionnaire were made in 140 cases. The question about changes of symptom of pre-and post-operative period was given to patients. There noted the improvement of symptoms as 81% with snoring and 77.7% with mouth breathing.
5. The tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy was recommended and determined by ENT doctors in 51%, parents of patients in 37%, and pediatricians in 9%.
In conclusion, Pediatricians play a minor role in decision making of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy in children. They are rather reluctant to recommend the operation. It is the time for pediatricians to the active in decision making of
tonsillectomy
and adenoidectomy as well as preoperative management and postoperative evaluation.
